New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School is an open-admission public charter school that prepares all students for college admissions and successful careers. Sci High provides a rigorous high school curriculum with an emphasis on science and mathematics in a supportive environment of learning and respect that prepares students to make informed choices about post-secondary pursuits.
Sci High is seeking an experienced professional and teacher to join our Career and Technical Education Team as the Makerspace Teacher!
Makerspace is a project-based course where students try their hand at a range of practical, technical, and creative crafts, including 3D modeling, woodworking, coding, and graphic design. The Makerspace teacher doesn’t have to be an expert in all these fields, but they should be excited by the design process and eager to guide students through it. Every Makerspace class is co-taught, so Makerspace teachers must be active and skilled collaborators.
Teachers ensure the academic and social growth of students through rigorous academic instruction, positive relationships with students, and contributions to the Sci High school community.
As a Makerspace teacher, you are expected to:
Develop and refine curricula in coordination with your fellow Makerspace teachers.
Work closely with your instructional coach in order to constantly improve practice
Coordinate with Exceptional Children's Services to provide appropriate accommodations to students with exceptionalities
Hold high expectations for each student; behaviorally and academically
Maintain a rigorous and engaging classroom
Build positive rapport with students
Establish and maintain strong communication with all parents
Develop and participate in initiatives to continually improve and enrich student learning.
An ideal candidate would have the following experiences and qualifications:
Experience working, creating, or teaching in a Makerspace or FabLab setting.
Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or extensive experience in coding, carpentry, design, or engineering.
Experience working with individuals with disabilities and exceptionalities
Skilled in working with a diverse community
Excellent spoken and written communication skills
