Hurricane Ida Updates

Wednesday, September 8, 2021

We hope that you and your family are well as we work towards recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. As power (and internet) continues to be restored throughout the city and some of our faculty, staff, and students have yet to return from evacuating, Sci High will remain closed through Friday, September 10th. NOLA Public Schools announced the reopening of schools in New Orleans. The Sci High operations and facilities team are working to continue assessments and perform the necessary work for the campus to reopen safely. In attempting to balance the needs of our families during this time and the importance of resuming school for Sci High:

  • Curbside meal service will begin at the school on Wednesday, September 15th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
  • Students will return to virtual learning on Monday, September 20th through Friday, September 24th.
  • We anticipate students returning in person, on Monday, September 27th, using the hybrid learning schedule. Families will receive more information about our reopening plan and hybrid groups in the coming days.
  • We ask that every family completes the Post Storm Recovery Survey when they are able to. The survey will provide information for us to prepare a reasonable timeline for reopening the school that will accommodate the majority of our community.
  • We also ask that families consider COVID-19 testing before we return to in-person to help mitigate large quarantines and future school closures related to COVID-19.

We'll get through this if we do it together! Please stay safe!

Whether you rode out the storm in NOLA or evacuated elsewhere, we hope that you and your loved ones are all safe and well as we assess the damage caused by Hurricane Ida.

Based on the uncertainty surrounding the power in Orleans Parish and in conjunction with NOPS, we have made the decision to cancel school until further notice. The City of New Orleans has asked all residents who evacuated to stay where they are for now as they work to get roads and hazards cleared and restore basic services. We will give families at least five days' notice before school reopens and will communicate further updates as we are able. As soon as we have a timeline for power restoration, we will update you again and give you as much information as we can to help guide your decisions. NOPS is also planning to give a district update on Sept. 7th.

Right now, do not worry about school! Please prioritize your and your families' safety and take this time to make travel plans, assess damage to property, and check on loved ones.

We know that this year has already presented an incredible number of challenges for our Sci High community, but I know we can overcome anything if we support each other.

Please stay safe! We look forward to seeing you again soon!

NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) announced the closure of schools and its Central Office on Monday, Aug. 30 in advance of Tropical Storm Ida.

NOLA-PS and Sci High will continue to monitor Ida and connect with local and state leaders regarding storm recovery needs. On Monday, district officials will assess any recovery needs and communicate plans to reopen schools once assessments have been completed. Should there be any school closures, you will be notified via phone and/or email.

Should families decide to evacuate students are advised to keep their school issued devices (laptops and hotspots) with them. Do not leave the device at home during the storm as the devices can be used to communicate with the school and teachers during this time. Should families decide not to evacuate it is advised to fully charge then unplug school issued devices and place the devices on a high surface such as a shelf, or cabinet where it is accessible but not at risk of damage.

If you have not done so already, consider following Sci High on Twitter (@SciHighNOLA), Instagram (@noscihigh), and on Facebook (@noscihigh) as we will post all storm-related announcements on social media and the school’s website.

Please remain vigilant by monitoring the City’s announcements and updates from Sci High regarding the storm.
